Although my personal preference is to concentrate on self hypnosis and its many benefits, it’s impossible to ignore the self study hypnosis courses now widely available on the internet which are aimed at those wanting to use hypnosis on others. Many claims are made for these, some of them highly dubious, some of them quite possible and practical.
For some people there may be an issue here of whether it’s even right to attempt such things. I can’t make that call because of my direct involvement in the subject but I can say that it is not illegal in any civilized country that I am aware of. It’s also true that hypnosis cannot make people do something that is completely against their nature. Despite what you might hear you cannot hypnotise someone to harm themselves or others. You cannot hypnotise someone to rob a bank.
That’s not saying that you can’t hypnotise someone to do things they might not normally do. We’ve all seen stage hypnotists make people bark like a dog or behave like a monkey – and those things are practical examples of real hypnosis. What has to be taken in to consideration is that the person in question has, to an extent, “pre-hypnotised” themselves just by going to the show in the first place. They are open to the idea of hypnotism and a bit “softened up”, they are more open to hypnotic suggestion than they would normally be – they might not admit it out loud, but they’d quite like to be hypnotized.
There are also those who would like to use hypnotism to effect those around them in personal or business situations. Indeed it could be said that some people already do this – albeit subconsciously. What do I mean? Well have a look around you, at your friends, acquaintances and work colleagues. Are some of them more persuasive than others? Are there some who easily hold the attention of a group? Are there some who dominate meetings – not by being brash or bullying but by calm discussion? These people are certainly using some of the principals of hypnosis. With training, most people could be more effective in situations like these.
But how can you tell which self study hypnosis course is right for you?
A lot will depend on your attitude and what sort of person you are. While I might be slightly put off by claims of “underground methods”, there is certainly a difference between what is accepted by the general public, and the scope and abilities of some hypnotists and hypnosis practices. I might prefer a more methodical, less exaggerated approach where you might like the punchy, hard-hitting style of some hypnosis scripts. Without meaning to be flippant, it’s a bit like the fact that I might like pasta and you prefer grill – I might like beer and you prefer wine – it’s entirely a personal preference thing.
It would be wrong, and frankly a bit presumptuous, to say that a given system or course doesn’t work. There is no doubt that hypnosis works. It is a fact that people can be successful with a self study hypnosis course. It’s also true that some people do not succeed – just like some people can’t get a grip of higher math. It doesn’t make the math wrong.
So in making your choice you can only really be guided by yourself. Read the websites carefully, trying to see through the salesmanship to get to the attitude of the person or people behind the words. It’s not always easy because the writing style of these pages is, not surprisingly, partly based on the powerful persuasive techniques that you would learn on a self study hypnosis course. However, if you read through a couple of times you’ll should certainly get the style of the course being offered and will therefore be able to judge whether it’s for you. It’s important to feel a degree of affinity for the material – that you’re on a similar wavelength as the course provider – or you simply won’t get on.
As a starting point for your search, consider the following which each offer a different approach:

Self Hypnosis for Weight Loss - Five Compelling Reasons
Among many choices there is a hypnosis program for weight loss which is claiming a 94% success rate and offers a 100% money-back guarantee if you don't reach your weight loss goals. That's fine, but can it really be that effective? Is using self hypnosis for weight loss a good idea or just a lot of hype? We've looked into it and these are our thoughts:
Changing the way we look is never easy but there is a growing movement towards self hypnosis for weight loss which often takes the from of audio techniques on tape, CD or MP3. While strictly speaking these are spoken by someone else and therefore not true self hypnosis they effectively the same thing.
And they are effective. The AMA itself supports the use of hypnotism and has done since 1958 so this is no new fangled fad or fashion. Hypnosis is a proven and increasingly popular way to loose weight. When you consider some of the advantages it’s hardly surprising.
So let’s look at the five compelling reasons we’ve found for weight loss through self hypnosis:
1. If you’ve got this far then at least a part of your mind wants to lose weight. As everything we do is controlled at the deepest level by our desire, our mental state, then allowing that side of your subconscious to come forward through gentle hypnotism can only be of benefit. Your chances of success are multiplied many times by your frame of mind.
2. Self hypnosis as a method of weight loss means you’re not struggling with diet regimes. You’re not forcing yourself to do things you don’t want to. You’ll crave healthy foods not fattening ones. You’ll look forward to some gentle exercise, you’ll take pleasure in making yourself fitter and healthier.
3. There’s no extra costs for meetings, pills or special foods. You can achieve your goals in the comfort of your own home and no-one’s going to recommend expensive “new” or “improved” dietary supplements. There’s no pressure either from people in the meetings. You can relax and go at your own pace.
4. There are no fad foods, no unknown or experimental substances. Seems that every new diet that comes along has a new “wonder food” or additive associated with it – but how safe are they? If you’re using self hypnosis for weight loss you know exactly what you’re eating because you choose it!
5. It’s a proven, healthy system to help you achieve your goals. It’s supported by the AMA and it’s been called the “tried and true” weight loss program by ABC News. It’s starts to work as soon as you do and you’re always in complete control.
You could accuse me of being biased – but in return I would ask you to look at the facts. I can’t see a single negative to using self hypnosis for weight loss and the positives speak for themselves. It’s safe, successful and keeping the weight off once you’ve reached your goal just means continuing to do things you find a pleasure.

The effectiveness of hypnosis to stop smoking
If you’re looking into the effectiveness of hypnosis to stop smoking there’s a good chance you’ve tried several methods to quit smoking already. Although it’s certainly not always the case, quitting smoking through hypnosis usually comes after willpower has been tried and other methods like patches or gum. This may in part be because people believe it to be an expensive remedy - and indeed professional hypnotherapists are well-paid individuals - but with a number of very good tapes, CDs and downloads available this is no longer the case. The use of such methods at home - effectively self hypnosis to quit smoking - is today a viable alternative.
But what of hypnotism as a solution? Does it work or is it just mumbo-jumbo? If you ask around, you’ll almost certainly find that some of your friends and acquaintances who had trouble giving up smoking with patches or gum found that hypnosis helped, while others will say that quitting smoking though hypnosis didn’t work for them.
It’s true that hypnosis does not work on everyone. Some people just don’t take to it. However, there is increasing evidence to suggest that it is a very good remedy in many cases and the AMA itself – who obviously have to be extremely careful in any recommendation they make – have stated that hypnotism is an effective adjunctive therapy (it works well on its own or in tandem with other therapies).
One important consideration when deciding whether to use hypnosis for smoking is contained in that previous sentence. It’s the fact that the AMA and other health organisations are quite happy for hypnotism to be used with other methods. Although perhaps unnecessary, the fact that you could combine a drug-based anti-smoking regime with hypnosis underlines its inherent safety. These days the acceptance of hypnotism as an effective alternative for many conditions (it has been approved by the American Medical Association since 1958) means that there are relatively few who are nervous about it but even they should be reassured by the recommendations offered by numerous leading medical and health organisations.
Another of your considerations is probably the withdrawal symptoms associated with stopping smoking. As a former smoker myself I understand where you’re coming from. It will therefore be encouraging for you to hear that the Journal of American Medicine found that there were little or no withdrawal symptoms when using hypnosis for quitting smoking.
So how can we gauge the effectiveness of hypnosis to stop smoking? We can’t really rely on word of mouth because each case is different. We can be re-assured by leading bodies like the AMA that it is recommended and that it does indeed work, but is that enough to convince you to give it a try? In the end, like all things, it has to be your decision. As a smoker myself for almost thirty years I can say that I found a self-hypnosis CD to be the method that finally worked for me. I’m probably now healthier in my late forties than I was in my early thirties! I hope the same for you.

Self Hypnosis Information
I decided to start this blog to share my experiences of self hypnosis and to try and point those people searching for an alternative solution to their challenges in the right direction.
I'm not a doctor. I make no claim that any of these things will work for other people and I strongly suggest you talk to your own medical practitioner before using self-hypnosis for treatment of health problems.
However, self-hypnosis has worked for me on two occasions - once to combat stress (which was making me quite unwell) and the other to quit smoking. After trying many different methods I have to say that using self hypnosis to quit smoking is the best way I know. As for my general health - never been better. I can't remember the last time I had so much as a cold.
That's about it by way of introduction - just letting you know why I've started a self hypnosis tips blog. If you have anything to share or comments to make I'd be delighted to hear from you.
